The heat question

Scrub through a July day.

Slide from sunrise to after dark and watch four surfaces. This is why we plan shade and Cool-Touch turf where people sit and lie down.

0°FCool-Touch turf after a rinse
0°FPavers

Sample readings for a 112°F July day. The dashed line is about 120°F, where bare feet start to notice. Your yard depends on sun, shade and wind.

Infill

Under the turf

What a good quote should say.

  • How deep they dig (we dig 4 inches)
  • How much base and how many compaction passes (3 inches, two passes)
  • How seams are joined (tape, glue and nails every 6 inches)
  • Which infill, and how much
  • The warranty, in years, on the turf and on the work
  1. Cooling infill, brushed in
  2. Turf with flow-through backing, seams glued and nailed every 6 inches
  3. 1 inch of leveling fines, graded to drain
  4. 3 inches of crushed rock, compacted in two passes
  5. Weed barrier
  6. Native soil and caliche, dug out 4 inches

FAQ

More turf questions.

All questions
How hot does turf get?
On a 112°F July afternoon, standard turf in full sun can pass 160°F at the surface. Cooling infill, lighter blades and shade all help, and the slider above shows how much.
What face weight should I want?
Face weight is how much blade is in a square yard. 60 to 80 oz is a solid backyard turf. Higher isn’t always better: it holds more heat.
What should a turf quote say?
Base depth, compaction passes, seam method, nail spacing, infill type and the warranty in years. If a quote doesn’t say, ask.
Is turf better than desert plants?
For a play lawn or a dog yard, yes. For the edges nobody walks on, desert plants and DG use little water and some cities pay you to plant them.
