Under the pavers

Pavers sink when the base is thin.

Seven inches of the yard comes out before a single paver goes down. Here’s what goes back in.

If any section settles more than a quarter inch in five years, we lift it and relay it free.

  1. Polymeric sand joints and a concrete edge restraint
  2. Pavers, set and compacted
  3. 1 inch of bedding sand
  4. 4 inches of compacted base
  5. Geotextile fabric

FAQ

Paver questions.

Will pavers get hot?
Lighter colors stay cooler. Sand and ivory travertine run noticeably cooler underfoot than charcoal in July.
Do they need sealing?
Not right away. Sealing every 2 to 3 years keeps the color and locks the joint sand. It’s $1.75 a sq ft.
What about weeds in the joints?
Polymeric sand hardens in the joints and keeps weeds and ants out. We sweep it in, compact it and wet it to set.
Can you lay pavers over my old concrete?
Often, yes, with thinner overlay pavers. It’s common on pool decks and front walks. We check the slab on the design visit.
When can we use the patio?
The same day. Pavers don’t cure like concrete. Give the joint sand 24 hours before heavy rain or a hose.
